Bird Watching

We did a week all about birds and luckily had some great weather to do some bird watching. Here is how we made binoculars to do our bird watching.

We used toilet paper rolls taped together with masking tape.

I punched a hole in each side and used ribbon to create a strap so they could hang around the childrens' necks.

I gave the children markers and stickers to decorate and personalize them.

Then we headed out to see what we could find.

Cloud Dough

I found this fun recipe for Cloud Dough from Juggling with Kids. It has two simple ingredients and it creates an interesting texture.

The original recipe calls for 8 cups of flour and 1 cup of baby oil. I cut this in half.
- 4 cups of flour
- 1/2 cup of baby oil

I had to mix it with my hands for a few minutes and add a some more baby oil to get it to a good sticky consistency.

We used a vinyl table cloth on the floor to help contain the mess. The children had lots of fun playing with it. I did notice that as the children were playing their hands were absorbing some of the baby oil causing it to dry out a little and you can imagine what a mess dry flour can make. This was definitely a fun but messy activity.

Foot Print Penguins

To go along with our Animals at the Zoo theme we made Foot Print Penguins.

I traced each child's foot on black construction paper.

I cut the pieces for the penguin's feet, belly, and mouth for them to glue on. Then we used googly eyes.

Lion Mask

One of our recent themes was about animals in the Jungle. I wanted to share this cute Lion Mask that we made.

I cut the yellow circles for the Lion's face and drew the nose and mouth on it. If you have older children they could try cutting it themselves. The tissue paper I purchased from Michael's was already cut in small squares. You could use other types of material such as pieces of colored construction paper.

They painted the whole plate with glue.

Then put all the pieces on.

We had a roaring good time!
